Multiple Subject Credential: Chinese Bilingual Authorization

The Bilingual Authorization in Cantonese or Mandarin allows candidates to add a supplementary authorization to any California teaching credential.  At SF State University, candidates may complete this authorization as part of the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential program or the PK-3 Early Childhood Education Specialist Instruction Credential program.

All candidates must pass a program administered language proficiency test prior to enrollment in coursework for the bilingual authorization. This test is administered either in person or online with a faculty member in the Department of Elementary Education. For more information, students can contact the chair of the department.

In addition, all candidates for bilingual authorization must complete a field experience in a bilingual classroom setting. Students enrolled in a preliminary credential program at SF State complete this as part of their student teaching. Other candidates may show proof of professional teaching in a bilingual setting.
