Africana Studies BA + Ethnic Studies MA SF Scholars Roadmap

The San Francisco State Scholars program provides undergraduate students with an accelerated pathway to a graduate degree. Students in this program pursue a bachelor’s and master’s degree simultaneously. This program allows students to earn graduate credit while in their junior and/or senior year, reducing the number of semesters required for completion of a master’s degree.

This roadmap is a suggested plan of study and does not replace meeting with an advisor. Please note that students may need to adjust the actual sequence of courses based on course availability. Please consult an advisor in your major program for further guidance.

ENG 114 can only be taken if you complete Directed Self-Placement (DSP) and select ENG 114; if you choose ENG 104/ENG 105 through DSP you will satisfy A2 upon successful completion of ENG 105 in the second semester; multilingual students may be advised into alternative English courses.

2

To avoid taking additional units, it is recommended that you meet the SF State Studies (AERM, GP, ES, SJ) requirements within your GE or major.

3

To determine the best B4 course option, students should complete the online advising activity at mathadvising.sfsu.edu. Questions? Contact Gator Smart Start.

4

A course in statistics, such as MATH 124ETHS 116, or ETHS 117, is highly recommended.

5

Complementary Studies

Students completing a Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies must complete 12 units in Complementary Studies in courses bearing a prefix other than AFRS or courses cross-listed with AFRS. These units may be in

  1. a language other than English;
  2. one course from each AA S, AFRS, LTNS, and RRS;
  3. four courses from one prefix: AA S or AFRS or LTNS or RRS;
  4. a minor or certificate;
  5. units earned in a study abroad program; or
  6. a coherent group of courses complementary to the major.

With the approval of an advisor in the major, courses which fulfill the Complementary Studies requirement may be lower- or upper-division units, resident, or transfer units.

6

Consider taking a class combined with a laboratory or a separate lab to fulfill B3 if not already satisfied.

7

Area of Emphasis (9 units)

Select 9 units on advisement from one area to gain a deeper intellectual grasp of the field. A full list of Area of Emphasis course options can be found in the degree requirements.

8

Area Emphasis

Students are required to focus on an area of emphasis in Africana Studies, American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, Latina/Latino Studies, or Race and Resistance Studies. Courses selected to fulfill the emphasis will provide a student with the subject matter foundation to complete the culminating research project field study or thesis. Upon advisement, upper-division/graduate coursework in the College of Ethnic Studies and other departments on campus may be used.
